Bet Options and Poker Position
Position is power in poker. If we know how to size up an opponent positionally we may have better chances in the game.
poker position is knowing what our odds are seated as we are in relation to the button or the dealer. Position is always a major factor in poker, especially in Holdem. Basically, because betting rounds follow a clockwise movement, we then base our positioning strategy accordingly. This means players first to do a poker move will be at a disadvantage from players last to do a poker move—the latter will have more time seeing what the first players have in mind and hand by their poker plays.
Hence, the better our position, the more opponent's strategies are stripped before us, and the better our chances of winning—position power. As we see more of the opponents' reactions to their hands and to the board cards, plus their betting amounts, we who are positioned late get a better read of their overall play. Hence, we are better equipped with our betting decisions when our turn to act comes. Good position strengthens bet odds.
Here are some position labels with their relative strengths and weaknesses in poker. Knowing these positional factors is vital for a smart play in the game. When playing as the small blind (one of the early positions in poker), we get the most disadvantageous position especially post flop. One remedy here is to place a lessened bet of about half of what we would normally make if we were in a better position.
When playing as the big blind (again, one of the early positions) we are often faced with the predicament of having to place substantial bets yet with weak positioning. Playing under the gun (or in early position) is made much worse pre-flop and the position also renders most hands too weak to play post flop. The button (or dealer), on the other hand, has the most advantageous position—and that's for any betting round in poker. Being on the button, we see every player at the table doing their plays and having a lot of basis for a well placed bet when our turn comes.
In no-limit, position plays a major part in a winning strategy. With limit poker, position is not that as important, though it has its use. Either way, the best position is always being in late position. This poker position gives us a good hand-read on the opponents to base our bets on.
